Imagine a classroom where students are empowered to communicate, cooperate, connect, embrace diversity, and resolve conflict — that’s a Sanford Harmony classroom. Social emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary for being a healthy adult. This includes problem-solving skills, as well as teaching kids to embrace diversity and build healthy relationships that will last well into adulthood. This year we will be implementing this curriculum for SEL and I am very excited to see it transform classroom communities for the better. This involves a weekly lesson on different harmony goals, buddy up systems, and a morning meeting.
