What will be different this year due to COVID?
- Supplies- students will not be sharing supplies this year. Please only bring 10 pencils to keep in your desk and pencil pouch and replace them as needed from home. All supplies will be kept in your desk instead of collected as a class and passed out as needed. You can still bring communal supplies that are disposable like tissues, wipes, etc. You will travel with a pencil box to your other class.
- Desks- desks will be socially distanced instead of in groups and will be regularly cleaned in between classes
- Masks- masks are encouraged when students cannot social distance, this means masks will need to be worn in the hallway when we travel around the school as well as during small group instruction.
- Circle Time/Rug Time- we will not be having direct instruction on the rug where students cannot social distance. Instruction will take place at our desks.
- Travel- students will travel between my classroom and Mrs. Neumman's math/science classroom and nowhere else. This is different as we used to have students traveling to all other teachers in the grade level for reading groups. We will be going to recess with Mrs. Neumann's class as well.
Sandpipers! Students will have a VIRTUAL orientation this year from 2:00-2:30 (more details on how to sign on coming to you when class lists are announced!) I cannot wait to see my students and parents during this and tell you all about our amazing school year coming up! There will also be a special video coming out to help you get to know me, your new third grade homeroom or ELA/SS teacher for the 2020-2021 school year at Dune Lakes!
We have just received official word from the Florida Department of Education regarding school campus closures. The 3/31/20 press release states:
"Today, Commissioner of Education Richard Corcoran recommended that all Florida public and private K-12 school campuses extend campus closures through May 1, 2020. This recommendation follows President Donald J. Trump and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) extension of social distancing guidelines until April 30th." Parents, please know that we always want to provide you with accurate and up-to-date information, which is why we waited until FDOE’s official press release. Based on the information above, Walton County School District will continue our At-Home Education Plan and school campuses will remain closed to students through May 1st. |

Good afternoon parents!
I hope this finds you having a great weekend! I am excited to get started with our second week of distance learning! I know that at this time there are many of you with far bigger concerns than completing online work- please know that I understand this and I am willing and able to work around whatever you have going on. I will be available for video chat or phone conference with anyone from 12:00-1:00 each day as needed. If you need me at another time, just ask. Please know that if you message me and I do not immediately respond, I am not ignoring you, and I will get back to you ASAP. Class DOJO has had some issues this past week and has not been sending me notifications for messages. After spending two weeks preparing to launch everything this week, I decided it would be better for all of us if I assigned everything on Sunday before the week and give students until the following Sunday to complete that week of work. That means I am not checking to see if anything is done on a certain day, just that it is completed by the following Sunday. That gives each student 7 days to complete all assignments. However, this does not mean that I do not encourage reading 20 minutes each day and logging in to Compass Learning, and Khan Academy for additional practice. These programs will keep students on a routine, which is vital to creating a successful learning experience. Students should be spending at least 30 minutes each day on Compass Learning ELA and Compass Learning Math. The activities assigned in Compass are based on skills each individual student needs to work on according to STAR. ELA Expectations All ELA assignments will be posted in our ELA Google Classroom. To try to keep some normalcy for students we have decided to continue with ReadyGen lessons as we would normally. I have assigned the text “Brave Girl” in Google Classroom. There is a slideshow for the week with Focus Questions for each lesson. Students should use this slideshow to guide them through their reading for the week and answer the focus questions directly in the slideshow. I have made it where they each have their own copy of the slideshow so that answers can be directly recorded. When they have finished answering all of the questions for the week they should click “turn in” so that I know they have completed the lessons. I will post a few questions periodically during the week that we normally discuss as a class either as a question on Google Classroom or a Padlet. This will allow them to respond to their classmates' answers so that it will be more like having an in person discussion. Students will be asked to complete a reading response journal through Google Classroom. This will be posted as a Google Slides presentation. There will be many questions to choose from. Students will choose one question a day to answer about the book they are reading. Students should use the RACE strategy when answering questions and write in complete sentences. Students are able to complete a reading log each day as they read 20 minutes. This is assigned in Google Classroom under “READING LOGS”. Directions for this are in the slideshow. It is a simple 2-3 sentence response to their reading. Social Studies Expectations This week, we will be reviewing community helpers through Brain Pop, Jr. The assignment will be visible once they access the app in ClassLink. They will also write a letter to a community helper of their choice. Math Expectations We are beginning Module 7 in math. This module covers area, perimeter and word problems. I have set everyone to be back on Module 7 Lesson 1 on ZEARN. Each day students should complete the assigned lesson for the day on ZEARN. PLEASE tell your student not to go on past the assigned lessons for the week. Each week I will go back and reset them to the correct lesson so they will have to do it over again if they don’t stay on the assigned lessons. This week students should complete Module 7 Lessons 1-5 on Zearn. Below is a link to a youtube video explanation of each lesson, and I am attaching a copy of each problem set (and templates if needed) that they would be given if we were doing this in class. These are only if you would prefer to print them out as extra practice. After students have completed the ZEARN lesson, they should complete the google form that is posted in Google Classroom. The form has a few questions as an Exit Ticket from the lesson. This is just so I know if they are understanding the material. Here are video tutorials for this week’s lessons if you need examples. LEARNING ABOUT PREPOSITIONS THROUGH PAPER AIRPLANES!
This year’s Doodle for Google theme is “I SHOW KINDNESS BY...”
Friendship, smiles, thank yous, and hugs. But kindness is so much more than just being nice. This year’s theme invites you to tell us how you show kindness. Is it by helping around your home? Volunteering in your community’s green space? Maybe it’s comforting someone who’s down, or picking up trash in the park. However you define it, let us know how you bring a little bit more kindness into the world. Take your ideas and bring them to life in your doodle! Students will be working on their Doodle for Google for the next few weeks (they can work on this at home too!) I will mail them in by the due date. Good luck! |
Fables and Central Message
Today we read two different fables- Anansi the Spider and The Myth of Icarus. We determined the central message in each story and added our answers to a Padlet. Check it out!
